Five questions to ask before buying another security tool

More tools do not automatically mean more security. Ask these five questions before you sign the next contract.

Security budgets in small businesses are often spent tool by tool, each purchase reacting to the latest scare. The result is overlapping products, alert fatigue, and gaps nobody owns.

Before the next purchase, ask:

  1. What specific risk does this reduce? If you can’t name it, pause.
  2. Do we already own something that does this? Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace licences often include capabilities that were never switched on.
  3. Who will look at the alerts? A tool nobody monitors is just a line on an invoice.
  4. How does it fail? Understand what happens when the vendor has an outage, or when your subscription lapses.
  5. What does leaving look like? Check data export, contract terms and migration effort before you commit.

Answering these honestly often reveals that the best next step is configuration, process or training, not another product.
